Viewed across the rural landscape, Brownie’s dark-toned ply and batten cladding dissolves into the environment around it. Planned in a square, and with a 90 square metre footprint, the house makes clever use of a loft and an enclosed atrium courtyard that provides shelter in all conditions. With projected windows strategically placed to take in alpine and coastal views, and an extensive sustainable focus that includes timber finishes from Natural House Company, photo-voltaics, batteries, LED lights and water storage, Brownie’s is an exemplar of the possibilities of compact rural living.
This is great news! In association with our partners in Health Based Building, Hardie and Thomson; ‘Naturalhouseco’ Java Oil has gained compliance for commercial Group 1 building specifications.
“The Protega laboratory in Sweden reviewed the supplied NATURALHOUSECO™ stain and carried out adhesion tests, including attempting to ignite the product once coated with Fireshield 1FR system. NATURALHOUSECO™ stain did not have any adverse effects or adhesion issues when used with the Fireshield 1FR system. NATURALHOUSECO™ plant oil based stain, and the Fireshield 1FR system, will achieve a Group 1-S surface finish for compliance purposes.”
A client of ours who is going down the path of converting a shipping container, discovered this: “FYI – Turns out the standard for these containers is that already toxic plywood is made even more toxic by a process whereby the manfacturer impregnates the plywood with a class II, slow-releasing pesticide.”
She has taken the decision to replace the plywood completely and replace with Eucalyptus T&G, finished with our Java Oil. Thanks for bringing this to our attention 🙂

Enterprising Christchurch business Hardie and Thomson are a major distributor of our finishes … they supplied all the timber, oils and finishing expertise for Spice Paragon. The floors, wall panels, tables and bar tops are ‘aged’ Heritage Beech, sustainably milled by Foreverbeech, and finished in Natural House Company’s Java High Solid Oil.
